Description Tab enhancement

Details:

Dear PCGen CodeMonkies,

I've just recently tried to use the Description field on my
character sheet. Within PCGen the description seems to
act normally. I can type in things and the line breaks will
stay within the text. However, upon exporting to
an .html file the all of the line breaks are stripped from
the ASCI. I suspect that in UNIX it would not do this but
in Windows it would because of the way that windows
interperets carrige returns and line feeds. Could you add
support for the correct line returns for windows people?
I would really like to use this field for my players.

Once I've added notes to my description field I've
noticed then if I switch to a different tab and then back
to the Description tab the interface doesn't remember
which of the items I was last editing. This is kind of
irritating when trying to type in notes about a particular
item and you're switching back and forth from Inventory
(that does remember where you were) to Description.

Lastly, could you add the ability to have the interface
realize when your description has change and have it un-
grey out the save button on the toolbar. This sounds
like a stupid detail, but sometimes my players can be
kind of.....uh well, stupid.

Thanx for your time and attention,

Kizan

I know what the user is looking for.

And that would be fine if we were ONLY doing HTML, but
we're not. If we use/allow HTML tags (or automatically
substitute them) in the data from the program on output, it
will break the .fo (PDF) output. At one time someone had
even coded up an RTF template... I don't think HTML tags
would fly in there either.

This has come up many times over the course of my
involvement with the program and no one has been able to
solve it yet that I've heard of. I would be ecstatic if they
could, but there's a bit more involved than simple substitution
unfortunately (I do keep hoping though.... ).

What the user is looking for is for line breaks to be
replaced with <BR> tags – in HTML/XHTML, whitespace is
normalized before presentation. So if I type one space or
one hundred spaces, one carraige return or a dozen, it will
be rendered as a space. Line endings aren't significant for
HTML – they are normalized just as with any other white space.

All the user wants is for text that they enter, like this
paragraph, to have <BR> and/or <P> tags in the output HTML
where there are line breaks in what they enter. If you look
at any forum package out there, you'll see they all do this
substitution automatically. You don't have to think about
breaks.

This means, also, that any < or > should be replaced with
&lt; and &gt; as well, so that the text displays correctly.

Line breaks etc. are not going to happen... they are stripped
out to make the HTML and .fo files work properly.

The rest of this is code related, so PAP, slide it over into code.
