Shifter Claws & Morphic Weaponry

Description

Shifter claws at the moment do not work the way they should.
• Their damage die stays the same
• They do not get iterative attacks

Currently they are treated like 1d2 weapons that work exactly like normal claws.

Moreover the Ooozemorph's "morphic weaponry" is not implemented at all.

Relevant quotes

As the shifter gains levels, the power of her claws increases. At 3rd level, her claws ignore DR/cold iron and DR/silver. At 7th level, her claw damage increases to 1d6 (1d4 if Small). At 11th level, her claw damage increases to 1d8 (1d6 if Small). At 13th level, her claw damage increases to 1d10 (1d8 if Small). At 17th level, the damage die does not increase, but the critical multiplier becomes ×3. Lastly, at 19th level, the claws ignore DR/adamantine and DR/—.

Shifter claws can bypass a wide variety of damage resistances, even epic, but not magic. Is that intentional? No, at 3rd level, the shifter’s claws should also count as magic.

At level 6, the shifter gains the following new ability: Shifter’s Fury (Ex): At level 6, a shifter gains the ability to make several ferocious attacks with the same natural weapon. Instead of attacking with all her natural weapons, the shifter can choose a single natural weapon and make a full attack with that natural weapon, gaining a second iterative attack at a –5 as if it was a manufactured weapon. When she does so, all her other natural attacks count as secondary attacks and don’t benefit from shifter’s claws. At 11th level, she gains a third iterative attack at a –10 and at 16th level, she gains a fourth iterative attack at –15. This will be reflected in the next errata.

also the shifter has the option to use her claws instead of whatever are the natural weapons of the form she's "wearing".

If the form she takes has claw attacks, she can use either the base damage of her shifter claws or the damage of the form’s claws, whichever is greater. If the form does not have claw attacks, she can choose up to two natural attacks that would deal less damage than her shifter claw damage and have those attacks instead deal the same damage as her shifter claws.

the sources for the above are:
• Ultimate Wilderness: pages 26 and 27

https://paizo.com/paizo/faq/v5748nruor1hj#v5748eaic9wam

therefore a level 20 shifter with +2 strength would get, with her base shifter claws, the following 3 weapon entries:

Claws (note: full attack, chose between this and iterative, COUNTS as: magic, cold iron, silver, adamantine, and ignores DR/— ) +22/+22 (1d10+2, x3, slashing)

Main Claw (note: shifter's fury grants extra iterative attacks with one natural weapon of choice, you may use this attack instead of the chosen form's main natural attack if that damage is inferior, COUNTS as: magic, cold iron, silver, adamantine, and ignores DR/— ) +22/+17/+12/+7 (1d10+2, x3, slashing)

Seconday Claw (note: secondary attacks use half strength, but can be added to iterative attacks if you have "free claws" or free natural weapons, these attacks are not added to the current form's attacks, but you may supplant up to 2 natural attacks of the chosen form with this attack depending on how many "free claws" you have, if the chosen form has less than 2 natural attacks, you may NOT add this one, unless it can deliver an unarmed strike, COUNTS as: magic, cold iron, silver, adamantine, and ignores DR/— ) +17 (1d10+1, x3, slashing)

the "note" should go into the weapon's note field

Meanwhile poor oozemorph gets far fewer abilities... buuuuut a lot more attacks, which she keeps in every shape she takes.

Morphic Weaponry (Ex): An oozemorph can create a number of natural weapons to fight with from any portion of her body, regardless of her current form. At 1st level, as a move action, an oozemorph can form two primary natural attacks that each deal 1d6 points of bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage, chosen by the oozemorph when she forms them. An oozemorph can change the damage type of any number of her natural weapons as a swift action. An oozemorph gains one additional primary natural attack at 6th level and another at 15th level. The total number of natural attacks an oozemorph has at any given time includes those gained via her current form. For example, an 8th-level oozemorph who has taken the form of a wolf with beast shape I has a bite attack as part of that form; she can create only two additional natural attacks via morphic weaponry, for a total of three attacks available to her at that level. If the oozemorph later reverts to a humanoid form with no natural weapons, she can instead create three morphic weapons. This replaces shifter claws.

the above is from ultimate wilderness, page 81. It never got an errata or faq.

So, the oozemorph's weapons:
• stay 1d6 no matter the level
• never bypass anything
• get extra attacks in addition to the errata of the shifter's fury

the oozemorph's morphic waponry with the assumption above (lvl 20 +2 STR) will instead give these 3 entries:

Standard Morphic Weaponry (note: full attack, chose between this and iterative) +22/+22/+22/+22 (1d6+2, choice of slashing, piercing or bludgeoning)

Main Morphic Weaponry (note: shifter's fury grants extra iterative attacks with one natural weapon of choice, you may use this attack instead of the chosen form's main natural attack if that damage is inferior) +22/+17/+12/+7 (1d6+2, choice of slashing, piercing or bludgeoning)

Seconday Morphic Weaponry (note: secondary attacks use half strength, but can be added to iterative attacks if you have "free weaponry" or natural weapons, these attacks are not added to the current form's attacks, but you may supplant up to 4 natural attacks of the chosen form with this attack depending on how many "free weapons" you have, if the form has less than 4 natural attacks, you may add the remaining attacks by forming more morphic weaponry from any point of your body) +17/+17/+17 (1d6+1, choice of slashing, piercing or bludgeoning)

Is there a condensed version of “We need x, y and z implemented?” After spending 8 hours pushing through various fixes, I just don’t have the capacity to read a wall of text tonight.

I’m sorry, i only read it now.

I am rather bad at summarizing, as you might have noticed from past interactions. Let’s try this anyway.

  • Claws are not present in basic shifter or oozemorph builds as of the pcgen build detailed above

  • Shifter adds “iterative” attacks via natural weapons at specific levels of the class (and only by continuing to follow the class, so it’s not really a normal iterative thing) via the “Shifter’s fury” feature. So you can attack with the natural weapons of any shifter either as “iterative” attacks or as the normal 2 attacks at highest attack bonus.

  • Shifters claws adds ability to bypass a number damage reductions.

  • Shifter claws also allows the shifter (in any transformation) to use the damage and attack bonus of her claws, instead of that of the form she is using as long as the number of attacks is the same.

therefore there should be 2 “claws” weapons in the character sheet, one is the “shifter claws” with the iterative attacks (starting level 6) and one with the normal “claws”. Both should have in the notes what damage reductions they bypass.

  • Oozemorph loses the ability to bypass damage reductions. But “Morphic Weaponry” is not limited in number of attacks by the shape the oozemorph takes. Also the same feature adds several extra attacks which can either be executed at maximum attack bonus or be added to the “iterative” attack chain as secondary natural attacks (maximum attack bonus -5)

therefore there should be 2 “morphic weaponry” in the character sheet, one with the iterative attacks (starting level 6) and one with the “normal” claws which presents the extra attacks. “normal” weaponsy is all at full BAB (2 to 5 attacks) the iterative version presents all the extra (up to 3 extra depending on level) attacks at the “second” step, with the -5 from the maximum). There are no damage reduction bypasses, but the notes should say that the oozemorph can choose damage type between slashing, piercing or bludgeoning.

Not thinking I’m going to tackle this for 6.08. To much hackery. Natural Weapons that aren’t natural weapons is not my cup of tea. I’ll tackle this when we get to the formula conversion for weapons.

seems fair. Good luck.

Was comparing the oozemorph “morphic weaponry” to the “Unchained Flurry Of Blows”

They are similar, with the following differences:

▷ Unchained Flurry of Blows - uses full attack bonus without penalties or bonuses
⪢ Shifter’s claw - uses full attack bonus without penalties or bonuses
▶ Morphic Weaponry - uses full attack bonus without penalties or bonuses

--

▷ Unchained Flurry of Blows - increases damage dice with monk level and adds DR bypass.
• starts at 1d6, changes to 1d8 at level 4, 1d10 at level 8, 2d6 at level 12, 2d8 at level 16, 2d10 at level 20
• adds magic at level 3, cold + silver at level 7, aligned at level 10, adamantine at level 16
⪢ Shifter’s claw - increases damage dice with shifter level and adds DR bypass.
• starts at 1d4, changes to 1d6 at level 7, 1d8 at level 11, 1d10 at level 13, then stops
• extra, not done by FoB: increases critical multiplier (to x3) at level 17
• adds magic + cold + silver at level 3, at level 7, aligned at level 10, adamantine at level 16
▶ Morphic Weaponry - starts at 1d6 and does not acquire damage increase or special properties

--

▷ Unchained Flurry of Blows - is iterative only via the monk class, adds 1 extra attack at full bonus at level 1, 1 more at level 11
⪢ Shifter’s claw - is iterative only via the shifter class, adds 1 extra attack at level 1, period.
▶ Morphic Weaponry - is iterative only via the shifter class, adds 1 extra attack at level 1, 1 more at levels 6 and 15

--

▷ Unchained Flurry of Blows - is only iterative, at level 6 the extra attacks are at full bonus and full strength. An old bug (which i do not remember if it had been resolved) had it where acquiring levels in a class different from monk does not add more iterative attacks, it just raises the attack bonus (in theory it should only not add further attacks at full bonus). However this is useful because that is exactly what happens below.
⪢ Shifter’s claw - at level shifter 6 “splits” into 2 weapons “iterative” and “not iterative”
• Iterative - works similarly to the bugged unchained flurry except the only 1 extra attack is at -5 from full bonus and uses half strength. So you got 2 attacks at level 1, 3 attacks at level 6, 4 at level 11, and 5 at level 16. Much like the bugged unchained flurry of blows, the iterations only happen if you have shifter levels, in this case it is intentional.
• not iterative - is… well… not iterative, the only 1 extra attack is at full strength you only have this version before hitting level 6 with the shifter. But it stays also after level 6.
▶ Morphic Weaponry - at level shifter 6 “splits” into 2 weapons “iterative” and “not iterative”
• Iterative works similarly to the unchained flurry except the extra attacks are at -5 from full bonus and use half strength. So you got 2 attacks at level 1, 4 attacks at level 6, 5 at level 11, 6 at level 15, 7 at level 16. Much like the (bugged) unchained flurry of blows, the iterations only happen if you have shifter levels, in this case it is intentional.
• not iterative is… well not… iterative, all the extra attacks that get added are at full strength you only have this version before hitting level 6 with the oozemorph shifter. But it stays also after level 6. You got 2 attacks at level 1, 3 at level 6 and 4 at level 15.

--

▷ Unchained Flurry of Blows - counts as natural, unarmed strike and flurry of blows for feats and other purposes (with the sole exception of “improved natural attack” and “multiattack”, which exclude it unlike the 2 below)
⪢ Shifter’s claw - counts as natural and Shifter’s claws for feats and other purposes (so “improved natural attack”, “multiattack”, “shifter’s edge”, “amulet of mighty fists” etc.)
▶ Morphic Weaponry - counts as natural, morphic weaponry, and Shifter’s claws for feats and other purposes (so “improved natural attack”, “multiattack”, “shifter’s edge”, “amulet of mighty fists” etc.)
